Hiring Advice
Interviewing for culture, not just capability
July 2026
Most hires that go wrong do not fail on technical ability. They fail because the person and the organisation never really fitted — different expectations, different pace, different values. The good news is that fit can be assessed as deliberately as skill.
Define what culture actually means
“Good culture fit” is meaningless unless you can describe it. Is your team fast-moving and autonomous, or structured and process-driven? Do people collaborate closely with clients, or work mainly behind the scenes?
Write down three or four behaviours that genuinely distinguish your best people. These become the backbone of your interview.
Ask about real situations
Hypothetical questions invite rehearsed answers. Ask candidates to describe things that actually happened:
- Tell me about a time a project went off programme. What did you do?
- Describe a disagreement with a client or colleague and how it was resolved
- When have you had to deliver difficult news, and how did you approach it?
- What kind of manager has brought out the best in you?
Fit is not the same as sameness
Hiring for culture should never mean hiring people who look, think and sound like the existing team. The aim is shared values and working style, not identical backgrounds. Diverse teams consistently solve problems better.
Keep the process tight
Assessing fit does not require extra rounds. Combine technical and behavioural questions in the same interview, involve the people the candidate will actually work with, and agree feedback within days rather than weeks.
Remember that the candidate is assessing you too. A focused, respectful process is itself one of the clearest signals of your culture.
